Altera acquires OTN IP vendor Avalon Microelectronics
December 16, 2010Altera Corp. says it has acquired Avalon Microelectronics Inc. Avalon provides Optical Transport Network (OTN) IP for use in FPGAs and ASICs. The deal expands Altera’s ability to support optical communications applications at data rates at 1.2, 2.5, 10, 40, and 100 Gbps.
Solarflare releases SFP+ optical transceiver
December 15, 2010Solarflare has extended its family of SFN5000 10GbE server adapters with the launch of a new SFP+ 10GBase-SR optical transceiver module. The Solarflare SFM10G-SR 850-m multimode SFP+ optical transceiver is designed to support multiple types of optical fiber, including OM1, OM2, and OM3 multimode fiber, with standard LC connectors. It can drive OM3 fiber up to 300 m to support cluster, data center and enterprise networking applications.
Real trials 100GE in Thailand

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says that the True, a telecommunications conglomerate in Thailand, has successfully conducted a field trial of 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) transmission over its existing IP/MPLS network. The IP/MPLS network is based on Alcatel-Lucent service routing technology.
Sidera acquires Long Island Fiber Exchange
December 14, 2010Optical network services provider Sidera Networks, Inc. says it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Long Island Fiber Exchange, Inc., a facilities-based network service provider serving customers on Long Island and in Westchester County, NY.
Optical transceivers set sales record in Q3 2010
December 14, 2010Market research firm LightCounting says that global sales of optical transceivers reached $670 million in Q3 2010, exceeding the previous record set in Q2 2008 before the latest economic slowdown. The growth was driven by sales of 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ and DWDM modules, including 40-Gbps devices. Strong sales of FTTx transceivers and optical interconnects also contributed to the strong quarter.
Cisco is Aligning IT management with virtualization
December 11, 2010Cisco has been telling the world for about a year now to buy Cisco Unified Computing Systems (UCS) blades, integrate them with Cisco Nexus 1000V (N1KV) virtual switches and go virtual on a VMware platform. The company has decided to show the way to potential buyers (and set up a fancy demonstration site for them to boot) by building its own IT infrastructure around these components. There are already 4,000 VMs running on UCS, with a lot more to come.
