Verizon deploys optical LAN fiber-to-the-desktop technology

Verizon Business says it has leveraged GPON-based passive optical local area network (LAN) technology to bring fiber to the desktops at Russell Investments’ new global headquarters. The passive optical LAN technology enables high-speed voice, data, and video applications while reducing energy consumption, Verizon says.

FiberLight launches fiber-optic network in Baltimore

November 20, 2010

Fiber-optic network services supplier FiberLight, LLC held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Baltimore Technology Park this week to officially launch a new, $20 million 104-mile fully diverse fiber-optic network. The new fiber-optic network will augment FiberLight’s existing 123-mile Baltimore network and 299-mile Virginia and DC networks by extending its underground optical backbone.

Optical network in West and Asia

Spending on optical networking hardware grew quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter of 2010, according to market research firm Infonetics Research. Sales jumps in North America and the Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) segment offset continued slowing in Asia, according to information contained in Infonetics’ upcoming third quarter 2010 Optical Network Hardware vendor market share report.

Force10 Networks demonstrates 40 Gigabit Ethernet systems

Force10 Networks Inc. is exhibiting 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) solutions in booth #3439 at the Supercomputing 2010 (SC10) conference through November 18 at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Force10 switches also are demonstrating the ability of Ethernet to help provide high performance, flexibility, and cost effectiveness in converged data center fabric environments.

10GBase-SR, as defined by IEEE 802.3ae, is a mode of 10GBase-S for multimode fiber (MMF) with a 850-nm laser transceiver with a bandwidth of 10 Gbps. It can support up to a 300 meters cable length. The 10GBASE-SR media type is designed for use over dark fiber.

Avago debuts QDRx12/100GBase-SR10 CXP transceiver

Avago Technologies (Nasdaq: AVGO) has unveiled a CXP parallel-optic transceiver at the Super Computing 2010 conference. The new 12-channel CXP transceivers support lane rates of up to 10 Gbps for an aggregate bandwidth of up to 120 Gbps. The CXP modules are targeted at QDRx12 and 100GBase-SR10 applications, as well as proprietary designs.
