Opnext to launch search this month for Bouchard replacement

January 7, 2011

Optical module and laser vendor Opnext Inc. expects to begin its search for a replacement for former president and CEO Gilles Bouchard in the next few weeks. Interim President and CEO Harry Bosco, the man Bouchard replaced in April 2009, told Lightwave that a special hiring committee likely will be created at a board meeting this month.

TDS taps Calix for VDSL2 upgrade

TDS Telecommunications Corp., the nation’s eighth-largest wireline communication service provider, is upgrading its infrastructure of Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platforms (MSAPs) from Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) in 20 states. Targeting 25 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream initially, TDS is using all-Ethernet VDSL2 technology to enable voice, high-speed data, and in some areas video services to over 100 communities.

600,000 UK broadband homes by year end

Suggesting that it’s “sticking our neck out a bit with this,” UK broadband market research and analysis firm Point Topic predicts that the number of UK telephone lines carrying superfast broadband will grow from its current number of about 45,000 today to more than 600,000 by the end of 2011.

Quanta Services subs to install PennREN fiber-optic network

Quanta Services, Inc. (NYSE: PWR) has announced that its Sunesys, LLC and Blair Park Services, LLC subsidiaries have been awarded a contract valued at approximately $118.5 million to design and install a statewide fiber-optic network in Pennsylvania. The Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER), a coalition of Pennsylvania colleges and universities, research and health care organizations, and economic development entities, received funding for the project as part of the broadband stimulus program.
