Saudi Telecom to expand broadband access network with GPON, VDSL2
November 25, 2010Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has signed multi-million euro frame contracts with Saudi Telecom Company (STC), the main telecommunications carrier in Saudi Arabia, to expand its broadband access network. The project, which will leverage VDSL2 and GPON technologies from Alcatel-Lucent, will enable STC to improve service and expand the reach of its network while benefiting from enhanced aggregation and transport capabilities.

NBN Chooses Cisco Combo for Data Centers
November 23, 2010Cisco announced today that NBN Co, the company set up by the Federal Government to design, build and operate Australia's wholesale-only, high-speed broadband network, has selected Cisco to lead the implementation of its data centre infrastructure. The solution will be deployed by Cisco and will be built upon Vblock™ technology from the Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition, a collaboration of Cisco, EMC and VMware, for its next generation data centre.

Fiber-Optic Network To Revive Italian Broadband Market
November 22, 2010Italy's principal telecoms network operators agreed to create a new jointly-owned company that will build a dedicated nationwide next-generation network (NGN) based on high-speed fiber-optic cables. Surprisingly, the group has been joined by incumbent Telecom Italia, which previously resisted the notion of sacrificing its status as the dominant provider of last-mile access and long-distance broadband connections. However, BMI welcomes its decision to team up with its competitors and believes it had to move to counter the potential threat of the scheme to its core retail and wholesale businesses.
