FTTH reaches Quebec City via Bell Canada
March 14, 2012Bell Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of BCE Inc. (TSX, NYSE: BCE), says that citizens of Québec City can now benefit from the carrier’s CAN$225 million FTTH investment with the launch of Bell Fibe service in the city. The Canadian carrier says the FTTH deployment is the largest its kind in Canada and will support broadband TV, Internet, and home phone services.
VTel installs Clearfield fiber management platform for FTTH
March 14, 2012Fiber-optic management systems provider Clearfield, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLFD) says that Vermont Telephone Co. (VTel) has begun deployment of Clearfield’s FieldSmart fiber management platform as part of a network roll out funded via the broadband stimulus program. VTel will use the equipment in expanding its Wireless Open World (WOW) network to extend fiber to every home and business in the VTel service area in southern Vermont and roll out 4G/LTE high speed, wireless broadband services throughout Vermont.

Based on improved functionality in optical line terminals and optical network units, the trial demonstrated a flexible, low-cost optical access system for subscription-based 100-km broadband optical networks, the company says.
Verizon, NEC transmit 21.7 Tbps over field fiber
March 13, 2012For the second year in a row, Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ:VZ) and NEC Corporation of America have reported a new field transmission benchmark at OFC/NFOEC. This time, the two companies transmitted 21.7 Tbps over 1503 km of standard singlemode fiber in the Dallas area, which they say is the highest capacity to date.
