Intel Says Thunderbolt Optical Cables Coming This Year
March 12, 2012Intel spokesman Dave Salvator has reportedly confirmed to IDG News that the company will release optical cables for Thunderbolt later this year. Unlike the copper-based versions, these should provide more bandwidth and longer cable runs in the near future.

Semtech announces 51-Gbps SerDes for ultra-long haul
March 11, 2012Semiconductor supplier Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC) has announced it will soon supply engineering samples of the SMI5026 and SMI5036, its 51-Gbps DQPSK multiplexer and demultiplexer chipset. The SMI5026 and SMI5036 are designed to increase FEC overhead to improve optical transmission reach for ultra-long-haul and submarine optical networks.
SURFnet demos Cisco 100G DWDM between Amsterdam and Geneva
March 11, 2012Europe-based research and education network SURFnet has completed a test of Cisco's (NASDAQ: CSCO) 100G DWDM technology, the company says. The test saw the Cisco ONS 15454 M6 Multiservice Transport Platform transmit traffic between the National Supercomputing Center, SARA, in Amsterdam and CERN in Geneva, a distance of 1650 km.

CEA-Leti, III-V Lab show silicon photonics transmitter
March 11, 2012CEA-Leti and III-V Lab, a joint venture between Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs France, Thales Research and Technology, and CEA-Leti, have demonstrated a fully integrated tunable transmitter on silicon. They say this is the first time that a tunable laser source has been integrated on silicon.
