BT chooses Deddington for FTTH broadband pilot program
March 30, 2012BT says that Deddington, Oxfordshire will serve as the first pilot location for its fiber-only exchange program. The program is designed to test the benefits of fiber to the home (FTTH) technology. Regardless of the trial’s success, however, BT made it clear that FTTH “is a long term program given that copper-based services are expected to be available for many years yet.”
NBN Co announces three-year rollout plan
March 30, 2012NBN Co, the organization responsible for the deployment of Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN), has announced the first stage of its fiber deployment plans. Stage 1 calls for fiber deployment to be underway or completed in areas containing 3.5 million premises in 1500 communities in every state and territory in Australia – approximately a third of the nation’s homes and businesses.
Oclaro, Opnext agree to merge
March 26, 2012The optical components and subsystems space finally has seen the major merger observers have demanded. Oclaro Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR) and Opnext Inc. (NASDAQ: OPXT) have agreed to merge in an all-stock, tax-free deal. Opnext shareholders will receive a fixed ratio of 0.42 shares of Oclaro common stock for every share of Opnext common stock. As a result, Oclaro shareholders will own 58% of the merged company.
Lumos Networks completes testing Cisco 100-Gbps technology
March 26, 2012Mid-Atlantic-based service provider Lumos Networks has completed a technology test of Cisco's (NASDAQ: CSCO) 100-Gbpscoherent DWDM technology across its service area, according to the systems house. The test confirms that Lumos Networks can support 100-Gbps data rates on its existing 10-Gbps fiber plant by deploying 100G line cards in its current Cisco ONS 15454 platforms, Cisco says.
Telstra International deployes 40 Gbps to RNAL via Infinera DTN
March 26, 2012Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) reveals that Telstra International has deployed Infinera's 40-Gbps DTN capabilities for its optical subsea network in Asia. The Reach North Asia Loop (RNAL) network spans approximately 9,000 km between Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.
Socket Telecom Uses ADTRAN Total Access 5000 for FTTH
March 26, 2012ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says that Missouri CLEC and Internet provider Socket Telecom has built a broadband stimulus funded fiber to the home (FTTH) network in central Missouri using the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 broadband platform.
