Vermont Telephone deploys 100 Gbps to support FTTH

Using broadband stimulus funds from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA), VTel is expanding the capabilities of its network, which includes fiber-optic broadband access and IPTV delivery systems. The project also will expand VTel’s existing 1,000-mile, four-state optical fiber network from Vermont with connections to New York City, Boston, and Montreal (see “VTel taps Calix for WOW fiber-optic network” and “VTel installs Clearfield fiber management platform for FTTH”).

For its role in the project, Alcatel-Lucent will provide its 100G optical coherent technology, based on the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), the 7750 Service Router, and OmniSwitch 9800E Metro Ethernet switch. Alcatel-Lucent has also been selected as the integrator of VTel’s IPTV service, which runs on the Microsoft Mediaroom platform. Alcatel-Lucent’s 5620 Service Aware Manager will provide network management capabilities, and the deployment was supported by the company’s engineering and installations services team.
