tw telecom expands fiber network in Nashville

tw telecom inc. (NASDAQ: TWTC), a provider of business Ethernet and networking services, says it is expanding its existing fiber-optic network in Nashville, as part of the plan announced last fall to (see “tw telecom announces expansion plans”).

The expansion adds new fiber cable to extend the company's network footprint from the city's central business district to the west side of Nashville International Airport.

"A strong technology infrastructure is key for our economic development," said Bryan Huddleston, president and CEO, Nashville Technology Council. "It is important that our local communication providers, like tw telecom, continue their investments into Middle Tennessee. Companies benefit by having access to faster, better connected services to drive innovation and growth."

tw telecom says it will use the network expansion to offer its portfolio of data and Internet services to more enterprises, including its Business Ethernet and Intelligent Network capabilities. The company serves medium and large customers in healthcare, financial, legal, higher education, government, technology, and hospitality industries. Some of its customers in Nashville include BMI, Inc., and Healthcare Realty Trust.

"We are excited for this investment in Middle Tennessee and what it can do to help us to reach more customers with our industry leading customer service and Intelligent Network products," said Steve Yazell, vice president and general manager, tw telecom Nashville. "tw telecom is committed to the success of Middle Tennessee and looks forward to growing along with it."

The Nashville expansion is part of a national multi-market effort by the company to expand its metro fiber footprint across the country. As part of this effort, tw telecom plans to enter five new high-demand markets – Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Salt Lake City – and accelerate the density of its metro-fiber footprint in more than a third of its existing markets (see, for example, "tw telecom expands fiber network in Louisville and Southern Indiana").  The company also intends to expand its sales force, including sales and support employees as well as additional operations personnel to support this project.
