SFP+

SFP+ (Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus) is the second generation of the SFP interconnect systems designed for 10G performance. Initially, it is targeted to support speeds of 10Gbps for next-generation Gigabit Ethernet applications. It is smaller than any of the currently form factors and provides the highest density per line card.

SFP+ is the optical transceiver module designed for 10Gbps Ethernet and 8Gbps Fiber Channel systems. SFP+ is with more compact size and shape compared with former 10G fiber optic transceivers like X2, Xenpak and XFP, what is more, SFP+ is lower power consumption, this results in more densely installation capability than currently used 10G transceivers.

Several standards for SFP+ has been released. 10GBase-SR is for OM3 multimode optical fiber, relevant SFP+ working distance is 300 meters max. 10GBase-LR is for single mode optical fiber, relevant SFP+ working distance is 10km. 10GBase-LRM is for FDDI multimode fiber, and the SFP+ working distance is 220 meters.

Many companies including Cisco, Brocade, Dell, Enterasys, Extreme, H3C, HP, Huawei, Juniper and Netgear have released the SFP+ transceivers. SFP+ ensure the 10Gbps data transmission and the most densely installation capability as well as the lowest cost, currently it is well acknowledged as the ultimate choice for the 10Gbps fiber optic transceivers.
