Sewer internet not ideal
MORETON Bay Regional Council was already in negotiations to bring higher speed broadband to the region before Brisbane revealed plans to string fibre optic cable through its sewers.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said council had been working with the National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co) to bring forward the roll-outof the Federal government's fibre optic infrastructure in the region.
To have some of the slowest broadband speeds in one of Australia's fastest growing regions is clearly a frustrating and unacceptable situation for local businesses and residents, myself included,a Cr Sutherland said.
I'm happy to look at any viable plan from private enterprise for the roll-out of high speed broadband.
But, I have to say I'm a little sceptical about putting hundreds of millions of dollars worth of fibre optic cable into the same pipe as human waste.
The last thing I want to do is expose our community to unnecessary risk or raise expectations with a scheme that has run into difficulties overseas.a
I'm all for high speed internet, although the notion of mixing hi-tech broadband cabling with sewage needs a lot more runs on the board and scientific rigour before it's seen as a viable alternative,a hesaid.
And that's before any broadband technicians draw straws to decidewho pulls on a pair of gumboots in the event of a major cable failure.
