Samsung SDS deploys optical mesh network by Ciena

Samsung SDS Co., Ltd. has deployed an optical mesh network using technology from Ciena Corp. The global information and communications technology service provider used a wide range of equipment in the network, including packet-optical switching, packet-optical transport, Carrier Ethernet (CES), and Ciena’s ON-Center Management Suite in the private network, which will connect offices and employees across multiple locations globally.

The new infrastructure replaces Samsung’s previous ATM and MPLS-based network, which Ciena asserts was no longer able to deliver the desired network availability or overcome what the company called “general performance issues.” The new optical mesh technology will automatically route traffic around network issues to maximize availability with the lowest level of latency, Ciena asserts.

“Unplanned network downtime can not only disrupt customer-facing services, but it can also impact revenue and cause long-term damage to our brand,” said Ryu HaeKwang, vice president, Infra Tech. Team at Samsung SDS. “With Ciena’s proven solutions and mesh technology, we are able to take control of our network to ensure that our applications are constantly available and that employees can work normally, even if there is an issue in one part of the network.”

Samsung has deployed Ciena’s CoreDirector Multiservice Optical Switch, which leverages the company’s recently announced OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane, as a key piece in the network. Other Ciena platforms in the network include Ciena’s 6130 Multiservice Optical Platform and Ciena’s 3920 Service Delivery Switch.

The Korean company also is using the Ciena ON-Center INM/SLM software suite for network management, and Ciena Specialist Services to help minimize implementation costs and ensure that the network was turned up efficiently and effectively.

“In the highly competitive electronics industry, IT is a critical asset and there is no room for downtime,” according to Anthony McLachlan, vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific, at Ciena. “Samsung’s network is a blueprint for the kind of high-capacity network featuring carrier-class reliability that can handle the intense volume of data that large multi-national corporations generate, and to help them ensure that their network can survive any disruption to maintain business as usual.”
