Orange to set FTTH network in Spain

Orange Spain is allocating €300 million (USD381 million) over the next four years to build a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, reaching an estimated 1.5 million homes.

Set to begin offering services in a number of major cities before the end of this year, the new network will provide 100 Mbps bandwidth speeds to support an array of services such as online video, IPTV and even potential home-automatoin services.

The service provider said that it is willing to have other area service providers participate in the new network as investors, commercial agreements or purchasing wholesale capacity on the network to deliver services to their respective customers.

Thus far, Orange has invested over €3bn in Spain and serves over 1.3 million customers with a mix of wireline-based services, including wireless, PSTN voice, broadband and video services.

Orange Spain's parent France Telecom has been no less aggressive in their FTTH outlook for their home country. In France, the service provider announced earlier this year that it would spend €300-350 million euros ($394 million-460 million) to build out FTTH.
