Hargray finishes fiber build to Daufuskie

Hargray announced the completion of a major construction project to bring improved and more reliable connectivity to Daufuskie Island today.

The locally-based telecommunications company began construction late in 2011 with the goal of connecting Daufuskie Island with fiber optic cable. Previously, Daufuskie Island was served with wireless microwave communications equipment, limiting reliability and the amount of bandwidth and capacity available.

The project involved boring under the Calibogue Sound from South Beach in Sea Pines to install the fiber optic cable. Hargray worked closely with the Community Services Associates in Sea Pines to minimize disruption to nearby residents.

Now that this work is complete, residential and business customers will be able to enjoy improved quality, reliability and significantly increased capacity to the island. Modern microwave will continue to serve as a means of communications redundancy. The construction represented an investment of nearly $1 million for Hargray.

"This investment will greatly increase reliability and quality of communications for the residents and businesses of Daufuskie Island," noted Michael Gottdenker, chairman and CEO of Hargray. "The installation of this fiber network has been eagerly anticipated on Daufuskie, and this new level of connectivity will significantly improve public safety as well."
