Verizon, vendors present OpenFlow principles

In what could be a step toward adoption of OpenFlow and software-defined networking, Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and vendors ADARA Networks, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) this week said they will show how OpenFlow principles can reduce costs of service implementation and optimize data transport.

The demonstration took place at the second annual Open Networking Summit in Santa Clara, Calif.

Verizon, along with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), has been a prominent backer of the migration toward SDN and OpenFlow as a way to re-design network transmission protocols to more dynamically control traffic routing and better handle explosive data growth.

SDN is not really a new concept, but with the advent of the OpenFlow standard and advances in research concerning how it can be applied to existing data networks, it is set to take the networking sector by storm.

Just last week, several companies teamed up with Stanford University, where much SDN research has taken place, to create the Open Network Research Center. Also, Verizon is opening its own SDN innovation center.

Many questions about OpenFlow and SDN adoption remain.

Further standards may need to be worked out, and GigaOM noted this week that it's not yet clear how truly open the OpenFlow software layers will be.
