CapeNet builds 100G foundation with Ciena in Massachusetts
CapeNet, the operator of the 350-mile fiber optic OpenCape middle mile network serving southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod, is building a network with Ciena (Nasdaq: CIEN) that will be able to scale from 10G to 100G.
As part of the deployment, CapeNet will leverage Ciena's 100G coherent transport solution based on its 6500 Packet Optical Platform to serve as the optical backbone. Complementing the optical backbone, CapeNet will also deploy Ciena's 5150 and 3916 Carrier Ethernet Solutions (CES) for aggregation and delivering services to its customers.
To manage the network, CapeNet will use Ciena's OneControl network management solution, which will give a detailed view of transport and Ethernet network equipment.
Set to be complete in January 2013, the OpenCape network will provide alternative services to a host of regional businesses, government, education, libraries, research institutions, hospitals and public safety first responders.
Like other middle mile community network initiatives, OpenCape will also provide broadband connectivity to almost 70 community anchor institutions, including 30 libraries, 15 town network hubs, and six research institutions on Cape Cod.
