Brazil's Telebras unveils submarine cable plans

Telebras, Brazil's state-owned telecom provider, is taking off the covers of a new submarine cable network that will connect Brazil to the United States, Europe, Africa and South America's Atlantic coast.

Paulo Eduardo Kapp said during the recent Capacity Latam event in Sao Paulo that the new system would include five sections.

The first section of the cable will provide a connection from Ceara state capital Fortaleza to the United States, with a segment reaching Colombia; a second section will connect Fortaleza and Europe; and a third cable will originate in Fortaleza and connect to Africa via the Angolan capital Luanda, in addition to a leg connecting the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha.

The fourth section will run from Fortaleza to Santos, in Sao Paulo state, with a spur to Rio de Janeiro, while the final section will connect Santos with the Uruguayan city of Maldonado and the Argentine municipality of Las Toninas.

At this point, the Brazilian government has put together a list of potential partners to finance and build the cable.

However, Kapp said that only Brazil-based companies are eligible to get a piece of the business. "The partner has to be 100% Brazilian, and it must associate with and be part of other companies and consortiums in the sub cable network project," Kapp said.
