Ericsson unveils SSR 8000 Smart Services Routers

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), as part of its IP network product expansion, has introduced the SSR 8000 family of Smart Services Routers (SSRs). The routers aim to provide a simple, smart and scalable approach to support of converged fixed and mobile networks.

The Ericsson SSR 8000 SSR series includes:

Ericsson SSR 8020, with 20 slots
Ericsson SSR 8010, with 10 slots
Ericsson SSR 8006, with 6 slots

The systems house says its new SSRs offer low carbon footprint, superior system efficiency and quality of experience (QoE), and highly scalable architecture. For example, the SSR 8020 is a 16-Tbps system with 400G full-duplex slots that offer high density (e.g., up to 800x1G or 200x10G ports).

"Operators have been transforming their networks to IP for several years now, but requirements have grown, driving the need for a new round of equipment that can support new applications and revenue generation of fixed and mobile broadband segments, characterized by not only video traffic, but high call signaling volumes," stated Michael Howard, principal analyst, carrier and data center networks, at Infonetics Research. "The new Ericsson Smart Services Routers are designed to provide the scalability, resiliency, and subscriber/application support that carriers are seeking for their next generation networks."

The Ericsson SSR 8020 will ship at the end of 2011. Other Smart Services Routers will be available next year.
