MRV unveils smaller OptiDriver optical transport chassis

Optical transport systems vendor MRV Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVC) has added 12- and 16-slot chassis to its OptiDriver line aimed at applications that don’t require 48 slots of capacity. The company expects the new chassis to appeal to smaller data center interconnects, Tier 3 service providers, cable operators, enterprises, and others with similar requirements.

The smaller OptiDriver chassis provide the same features and capabilities as the larger chassis, MRV says (see "MRV launches OptiDriver optical transport platform line"). This includes what the company asserts is the lowest power consumption per 10G/100G service.

The OptiDriver 16-slot chassis supports a single row of single-height cards optimized for high-density 10G applications in remote locations. The chassis’s patent-pending design supports three rows of dual-height cards capable of supporting 100G and ROADM. MRV also sees the 12-slot chassis finding use as redundant management hardware in locations that need enhanced management reliability.

The entire OptiDriver portfolio is integrated with MRV’s Pro-Vision service delivery platform, the company continues. The systems include built-in processing for such intelligent control plane technologies as GMPLS and software-defined networking (SDN).

“The OptiDriver 12- and 16-slot chassis complement our 48-slot chassis, while untying the traditional link between capacity and features. MRV continues to evolve its innovative solutions portfolio, and the new chassis enable us to offer optimized solutions and configurations to closely match the unique needs of network operators, regardless of size, location, or environment,” said John Golub, vice president of global product line management for MRV Communications. “High-density, power-efficient optical transport solutions are no longer reserved for the largest operators; small and mid-sized users can now streamline support for new bandwidth-rich, revenue-generating services, too.”
